Our Commitment to Canada

Since 1945 Canada Steamship Lines and its affiliates have been part of the lifeblood of the Canadian economy. Throughout the years, Canada Steamship Lines has consistently fulfilled the needs of its clients by providing the supply lines necessary to ensure the survival and prosperity of many industry sectors.  Today, Canada Steamship Lines is considered a visionary pioneer in its field and a commendable success story for Canada.

Since the inception of Canada Steamship Lines more than a century and a half ago, innovation has always been embraced and its signature achievement, the self-unloader, is a ship that uses on-board technology to discharge cargo independent of shore-based equipment.  This technology has literally revolutionized the shipping industry. The company’s active role in the development and perfection of self-unloader technology demonstrates the willingness and motivation to perfectly align responsible environmental practices, flexible and affordable solutions to its customers – all in Canada’s best interest.  Moreover, Canada Steamship Lines success in self-unloading technology has propelled The CSL Group into a leadership role in domestic and international dry bulk shipping.
Canada Steamship Lines owns and operates 18 of the most modern self-unloaders and bulkers on the Great Lakes and employs more than 500 Canadians.  The company’s vision is one committed to Canada and it’s in this optic that Canada Steamship Lines invested more than $200 million in a renovation program that extended the life of many of its vessels navigating on the Great Lakes, thus securing employment for more than 125 employees for the next 25 years. Furthermore, the new state-of-the-art machinery and monitoring systems introduced on these ships demonstrate the company’s commitment to achieve and continually review measurable objectives set up for sound environmental business practices.

Canada Steamship Lines works with over 400 Canadian suppliers and purchases more than $100 million of goods and services from them yearly.  In addition, Canada Steamship Lines spends more than $16 million a year in contracts awarded to Canadian shipyards for maintenance work performed on its vessels.
